Welcome to Huntington Beach, California.
A city of southern California on the Pacific Ocean southeast of Long Beach, just 35 miles south of Los Angeles. Aerospace, metallurgical, and food-processing industries are important to its economy. Population: 194,000. Huntington Beach is consistently rated one of southern California's top beaches. Known around the world as "Surf City," Huntington Beach has 8.5 miles of gorgeous white sand beach and the longest municipal recreational pier in California. With an ideal Mediterranean type climate, visitors flock to Huntington Beach for sunning, swimming, surfing, fishing, and to watch professional sporting events such as volleyball and skateboarding. You can even build a bonfire on the beach, and fire rings are first come, first serve. Main Street in Huntington Beach is a five-block stretch of outdoor cafes, fine restaurants, unique shops and boutiques. Visitors wander along the beach, and in town, wearing their swim suits and even the finest restaurants do not require ties. Residents are friendly and Huntington Beach has been named one of the ten safest cities in the state. Free concerts and a weekly arts and crafts and farmer's market is held on the pier. The city is also centrally located near other major southern California attractions such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm and The California Adventure. Huntington Beach guarantees an exciting and unforgettable southern California vacation.
Southern California coast, 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 90 miles northwest of San Diego. In Huntington Beach one can enjoy the year round Mediterranean climate. Explore our eight and one-half miles of cascading beachfront, take a stroll on the magnificent pier, or discover the largest wetlands preserve on the coast of California. Huntington Beach is best known for its sand, almost ten miles worth. Jogging, walking, bicycling, roller blading and skating, need not end where the city does, however, because a path continues. Starting at Sunset Beach, a paved trail runs along Bolsa Chica State Beach on the northwest side of the city to Huntington City Beach at the pier, then onto Huntington State Beach heading south all the way down to where Newport Beach is located. The crown jewel of the recreational system is its nine miles of spacious, sandy beaches. Huntington Beach is also home to one of the largest pleasure piers in the world. City's park system includes 58 public parks. Also within the city's boundaries are three miles of equestrian trails, school playgrounds, a city gym, a seniors' recreation center, two golf courses, 72 tennis courts, a marina, and a protected wildlife preserve. Huntington Harbor is suitable for light craft, and includes a dock, launching ramp, basic services and a restaurant. The harbor entrance is sometimes restricted by the US Navy, which loads ships with munitions at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station to the north of the main channel.

Local daily news in Huntington Beach: Vern's West County Picks
If Larry and Art get to do this, then here's this Huntington Beach Progressive Democrat's picks for the June 3 Primary Election. In order of importance: 1. NO on 98, YES on 99. Will have a whole post up on this later this week. Thank you to Larry for inviting me to a forum on this at Chapman University, but the 98 spokesman was just not convincing, and the anti-98ers were. And 99 is of value in its own right beyond just being an anti-98 measure. 99 = real (albeit modest) eminent domain reform; 98 = a trojan horse with anti-rent-control and anti-environment effects. 2. Democrat candidate for US Reprentative 46th District, Debbie Cook. Well, duh. Except Dan Kalmick is a brilliant young man with lots of great ideas and I hope he runs for state Assembly in 2010 - why can't some people start out smaller? Don't get tempted to vote for Dan though because, in order to attract the big donations she needs, Debbie should win the primary OVERWHELMINGLY. Click here to read the rest of this article.
Successful Fundraiser for Relay For Life Huntington Beach The Huntington Beach city departments hosted a chili cookoff Tuesday to launch a campaign that will raise funds and support for their Relay for Life team called HB United. The team's goal is to have 300 residents and 30 cancer survivors and to raise $30,000 for the American Cancer Society's signature event. For the cookoff, members of most city departments brought chili, cornbread and other lunch-time treats to sell, with the proceeds going to the team. There was also a mock jail where city officials had to contribute to HB United in order to be released. The cookoff raised about $2,240 for the team. Councilman Keith Bohr, Rainbow Disposal Chairman Ron Shenkman and Wave columnist Stan Cohen were the judges for the chili in the categories of best overall, most unusual ingredient and best meatless, vegetarian. Relay for Life will be held June 21-22 at the Ocean View High School track. The event honors cancer survivors and memories of those lost to the disease. Information: www.relayforlife.org or the City Clerk's office at 714-536-5227.
Who will be our next Orange County Sheriff?
The Total Buzz blog has released a list of the finalists to replace disgraced former O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona. Here is the list that Total Buzz published: They are Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams, OC Acting Sheriff Jack Anderson, Salt Lake County Undersheriff Beau Babka, San Bernardino County Undersheriff Richard Beemer, retired OC Sheriff's Lt. Bill Hunt, Anaheim PD Deputy Chief Craig Hunter, retired LA County Sheriff's Division Chief Sandra Hutchens, LA Sheriff's Commander Ralph Martin, and Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters. I am glad they put Walters last. That's about where he should be. I also don't think Bill Hunt has a chance in Hell, not after the way his campaign adviser Tim Whitacre went after Supervisor Janet Nguyen when she recently sought the OC GOP endorsement. For Whitacre to go after an incumbent Supervisor while his buddy Hunt needed her support was beyond retarded. Once again Whitacre destroyed Hunt's chances of being our next Sheriff. As for the other candidates, I think Anderson has been doing a fine job as our interim Sheriff, but I also think it would be a good idea to bring in new blood to the department. I would prefer to see an outsider get the job so the heads at the OC Sheriff's Department can start rolling. The corruption in that department is astounding. Already many of Carona's handpicked assistants have had to resign in shame. That said, I think Ralph Martin (pictured above) would be a terrific Sheriff for Orange County. He has far more experience than most of the others on the list and he has worked in a much larger department than most of the other candidates. He has my full endorsement and I hope he gets the job.
